U.S. Rep. Lloyd Doggett has asked Immigration and Customs Enforcement to parole the 18-year-old Dreamer it picked up last Friday near San Antonio's Occupy ICE camp.

Doggett, a Democrat representing San Antonio and Austin, submitted a formal letter Wednesday on behalf of Sergio Salazar Gonzalez, known to protesters at the camp as "Mapache."

"I urged ICE to grant parole to Sergio, a Dreamer, with no criminal history, who engaged in nonviolent protest against ICE," Doggett said. "While differing with both some of his political views and methods, I fully support his right to dissent without being targeted by the Trump Administration."

Gonzalez is represented by San Antonio-based legal assistance group RAICES, which had been working with him to renew his DACA status prior to the arrest. He is now in the Webb County Detention Center in Laredo, according to federal officials.

The Occupy ICE San Antonio, part of movement that spans multiple cities, has been conducting a nonviolent protest in front of the city's ICE facility since July 17.

It's been a busy day for Doggett, who also had to deal with an arson outside his downtown San Antonio office.
