Councilman Roberto Treviño, who caught shit a few years ago for spearheading the city's installation of $100,000-a-pop public toilets, is now stumping for a $75,000 shower.

The District 1 councilman urged the rest of council to help purchase a mobile shower station to aid the city's homeless population in staying clean, according to a WOAI report. The unit would apparently include eight showers and could be driven to different locations based on need.

"We must take a holistic approach to helping the homeless off the streets of San Antonio and into a better life," Treviño said in a Facebook post about the mobile shower.

The push comes shortly after Councilman Rey Saldaña unsuccessfully tried to convince council to use part of a new hospitality industry fee to aid homeless people.

While Trevino's latest plumbing crusade is likely to spark irate calls to AM talk radio, it's gotten a verbal thumbs up from several other council members.

"A haircut, and a shower, can change a person's life," Councilman Greg Brockhouse told WOAI. "I could tell you right now, I could put that in District 6, and clean areas with it, and help a homeless person get an employment opportunity, maybe get off a street. It saves a neighborhood."

Treviño made a similar point about clean neighborhoods when he talked up the pricy downtown restrooms. Giving downtown San Antonio its first 24-hour, standalone public toilets, he argued, would lead to cleaner streets.

Police records seem to support that. SAPD slashed citations for public urination in the area of the first of those public restrooms, according to the Rivard Report.
