Two special needs schools adjacent to Morgan's Wonderland will close at the end of school year to focus on a new endeavor.

The Academy at Morgan's Wonderland and The Bridge at Morgan's Wonderland will cease operation in June, the board of directors for CARE Inc., a nonprofit that oversees the schools, decided this week. After the end of the school year, CARE will shift gears and use the schools' site for "an opportunity that might actually help thousands of special needs individuals."

The details are sparse, though Morgan's Wonderland director of communications Bob McCullough said the idea is "in the planning stages."

The organization's board is looking forward to the upcoming project, but the closing of the school means displacing special needs students. McCullough said there are about 30 pupils, ranging in age from 12 to 24, and 15 faculty members between the Academy and the Bridge.

"We hope by announcing this currently, everyone will be able to chart a new path, and hopefully everyone will be successful in their future endeavors," McCullough said.

Gordon Hartman, founder of Morgan's Wonderland, opened the Academy in 2011 to provide a detailed education for special needs students. The Bridge helps young adults transition into life after the Academy and teaches students daily living skills.
