Tiger at San Antonio Zoo Dies After Undergoing Routine Physical

The San Antonio Zoo is mourning the loss of Kemala, a 12-year-old Sumatran tiger that was euthanized on Friday after sudden complications following a physical exam.

A Facebook post from the zoo said Kemala underwent a routine physical on Wednesday when she started experiencing complications while under sedation. Veterinarians and animal care staff said the tiger's condition worsened despite the animal receiving 24/7 care.
Staff eventually decided that Kemala would be put down.

"Kemala was a dearly loved member of our San Antonio Zoo family who inspired visitors and staff alike," CEO Tim Morrow said in a written statement. "Throughout this difficult situation our zoological department did everything possible, including reaching out to and receiving additional assistance and resources from local veterinarians, pharmacists and our partners at Methodist Hospital."

The tiger previously gave birth to two tigers that can still be found at the zoo's Big Cat Valley.

"Please keep our dedicated staff and, in particular, our animal care specialists in your thoughts and prayers as our zoo family mourns the loss of Kemala," Morrow said.
