HB2 Increasing Wait Times for Women Seeking Abortion Services

House Bill 2 has had a dramatic effect on abortion facilities in Texas, with facilities providing abortion care dropping from 41 to 18.

The Texas Policy Evaluation Project has been monitoring facilities that do offer the service, and found that wait times for abortion appointments vary across the state, with some waits lasting 10 to 20 days for an appointment.

The project found that times varied in Austin, Dallas and Ft. Worth, but were more stable in Houston and San Antonio.

In the Alamo City, wait times are consistently less than five days. That's because San Antonio has three facilities that meet strict ambulatory surgical center guidelines as required by HB 2.

The Texas Policy Evaluation Project found that between November 2013 and April 2014, 13 percent of all Texas abortions were performed in San Antonio.

The ambulatory surgery center requirement for Texas abortion care providers is currently on hold while the Supreme Court determines whether it will hear a legal challenge on the law.
