A historic home recently hit the market in San Antonio’s King William neighborhood, and the news should be music to the ears anyone fond of Golden Age architecture or classical compositions.
The house, built in 1890 and now listed for $1.2 million, was once the home of Silvestre Revueltas, one of Mexico’s most famous composers.
Revueltas lived a short but prolific life, as the historic plaque in front of the three-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bath home states. Though he died at age 40 due to pneumonia and complications related to alcoholism, he left behind a vast body of work that includes chamber pieces, orchestral works, film scores and ballets.
The composer, violinist, pianist and conductor was mostly based in Mexico City. However, in 1926, he arrived in San Antonio to serve as concert master for the Aztec Theatre. During his time here, he also performed and taught music at San Antonio College.
While living in San Antonio, part of which was spent at this King William address, Revueltas composed his septet “Batik,” which earned him inclusion in the American Association of Composers.
Aside from the 135-year-old structure’s musical history, it’s also a beautifully maintained Victorian home that exudes historic charm. Immediately upon entry from its small but distinctive wrap-around front porch, the eye is greeted with an ornate coffered ceiling. One can imagine Revueltas entertaining guests at a grand piano under its stately, elaborate carvings.
The house also includes a study, complete with fireplace, and an attic which has been converted to a bedroom with its own bath.
This home is listed by Elizabeth M. Barrera Lutz with King William Realty.
