The acquisition, which Hearst hopes to finalize this quarter, is the latest deal the New York-based media conglomerate has executed expand its Texas market share.

After its 2023 purchase of San Antonio Magazine from Open Sky Media, Hearst last year snapped up the periodicals Austin Monthly and Austin Homes from the same company. Prior to the purchase of the Austin magazines, Hearst launched an online newsletter targeting the city.

“The acquisition complements Hearst’s set of newspapers and reinforces our commitment to delivering high-quality journalism,” Hearst Newspapers President Jeff Johnson said. “It aligns with our strategy to invest in thriving communities with strong potential. We look forward to welcoming the Austin American-Statesman team to Hearst, joining 2,300 committed Hearst Newspapers professionals across the country.”

Other Texas publications owned by Hearst include the Beaumont Enterprise, Houston Chronicle, Laredo Morning Times, Midland Reporter-Telegram and Plainview Herald. Over the years, the company has streamlined its Lone Star State operations and shed employees by centralizing functions such as printing, layout and certain types of news reporting.
