The San Antonio Scorpions, the newest franchise in the second-division North American Soccer League, beat the Tampa Bay Rowdies Saturday with second-half goals by Hans Denissen (pk) and Aaron Pitchkolan (a header assisted by Denissen, man of the match). The game was played Saturday at Heroes Stadium in front of a crowd of 9,536.
“We want to be a very possession-oriented team and our possession was much better in the second half,” head coach Tim Hankinson said after the game. “There is a layer of trust that players have to develop … as we gain confidence and get results like tonight, that starts to lock in. If you can learn on the job and win, that’s the way to do it.”
After a sloppy start of the season, this is the second win in a row for the Scorpions, who outshot the Rowdies 15-3 and are now 2-1-1. They will face the Rowdies again at Tampa Bay on May 12, and will return home to face FC Edmonton on May 19. — Enrique Lopetegui
