According to the public interest group Common Cause, “in the San Antonio market, the new rules would allow a company to own two TV stations, eight radio stations, and several newspapers.” Dean Baker, co-director of Center for Economic and Policy Research, explains, “It is hard to say too much in favor of the current situation, but the FCC rule changes would simply make it worse. They will only lead to further concentration and fewer sources of news. In the case of cross ownership of televison and newspapers, they would have a common news staff, a single set of reporters.”

The Current editorial staff monitored several newscasts during the first week of January. (Sports and weather have been omitted.) As the analysis illustrates, San Antonio viewers are seeing a lot of the same news on each channel. With all the news and issues happening in a city of 1.1 million people, San Antonians see only a sliver of it.
