Flores was recognized Nov. 1 at HACU’s 38th annual conference in Aurora, Colorado, according to officials with the organization.
“As Chancellor, Dr. Flores has been a driving force behind initiatives to break down barriers for students in higher education,” Alamo College officials stated.
Alamo Colleges’ AlamoPROMISE is one of those initiatives. The scholarship program allows graduating Bexar County seniors to study at one of the Alamo Colleges for up to three years at no charge. The program has funded more than 16,000 students’ educations since its 2019 inception, according to San Antonio Report.
The Alamo Colleges have more than 100,000 students, making the district the largest college educator in South Texas. Roughly 67% of students are Hispanic.
“It’s a collective effort to open doors and break down the barriers that perpetuate poverty, ensuring that everyone has the chance to build a brighter future,” Flores said in a statement.
HACU works to create and improve educational opportunities for peoples of Hispanic and Latin American descent. The organization represents some 500 colleges and universities in the United States, Spain, Latin America and Puerto Rico, according to its website.
