San Antonio’s Muertos Fest, one of the nation’s largest Día de los Muertos celebrations, will remain in downtown park and entertainment district Hemisfair for the next 10 years under a new agreement organizers and the city unveiled Tuesday.

“Hemisfair has been a great venue for our festival, where the heart of San Antonio comes alive with art, music, altars and community spirit,” Muertos Fest Artistic Director Jim Mendiola said in an emailed statement. “This partnership allows us to continue our commitment to honoring tradition, while embracing the future of this beautiful celebration.”

Established in 2013, the free, two-day gathering includes live performances, large-scale altars, processions, art, food and family activities focused around the Mexican holiday for remembering deceased friends and family members. Last year’s Muertos Fest drew at least 135,000 people.

“I’m thrilled that Muertos Fest has found a permanent home at Hemisfair for the next 10 years,”
District 1 City Councilwoman Sukh Kaur said in a statement. “This beloved celebration has grown into a nationally recognized event that brings our city and community together in a powerful, joyful way. There’s no better place to honor Day of the Dead than right here at Hemisfair in the heart of San Antonio.”

Muertos Fest officials also said Tuesday that the gathering has expanded its relationship with the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico — San Antonio.

As a result, the UNAM School of Architecture will install a special altar commemorating the San Antonio Chili Queens, who brought the Mexican tradition of open-air food stands to the city in the late 1800s. The school also will help curate and operate a Day of the Dead Bookstore at the festival.

Muertos Fest 2025 will take place Oct. 25-26. Organizers expect to share the entertainment lineup and programming details later this summer.
