U.S. News and World Report‘s annual Best Places to Live rankings named San Antonio one of the 10 Best Places to Live in Texas.
The Alamo City clocked in at No. 6 on the mag’s Texas roundup. Its rankings are based on public data and readers’ opinions across criteria including desirability, affordability, happiness index, retiree taxes, healthcare quality and job market.
“San Antonio is as comfortable as an old pair of jeans,” U.S. News wrote. “It offers big-city amenities and world-renowned attractions coupled with a relaxed and inviting atmosphere. Most famously known as the home of the Alamo, the spirit of the region expands beyond its tourist labels, offering a community rich in Spanish and Old West heritage.”
Austin came in at No. 1 on the Texas rankings. Though the state’s capital city beat San Antonio overall, the Alamo City got a higher score for “value,” which represents affordability.
Surprisingly, a few border towns beat out Texas’ biggest cities. McAllen came in at No. 2 and Brownsville ranked fifth.
Corpus Christi and El Paso also slotted in higher than the Alamo City. But San Antonio bested both Houston and Dallas. Beaumont and Killeen rounded out the list, whereas Round Rock and Fort Worth didn’t even rank.
