How safe do you feel, San Antonio?

Like many questions about our city, it comes down to the part of town where you live. Four San Antonio suburbs are among the 50 safest Texas cities in a new survey of federal crime stats by security company Safewise, but the city proper earned no such distinction.

According to the FBI’s 2016 crime stats (the most recent available), the local suburb of Fair Oaks Ranch ranked 8th on the list, while Helotes, Cibolo and Alamo Heights came in at 30, 37 and 41, respectively.

Even if you can’t afford a house in any of those bedroom communities, there’s still good news. Overall, Texas is becoming a safer, according to both local and state numbers. Crime and incarceration stats are both down.

The West Texas town of Seminole topped Safewise’s list. There were zero violent crimes there in 2016 and its property crime rate was 44 percent below the national average.
