Look both ways before you cross, San Antonio.
A new study ranks our city as the seventh-deadliest in the U.S. for pedestrians.
The report, compiled by KURU Footwear, analyzed crash data in 36 of the nation’s largest metros to determine the safest and most dangerous for those who travel on foot.
Albuquerque, New Mexico, took the top spot as the most dangerous city for pedestrians. The worst of the worst also includes Jacksonville, Mississippi; Las Vegas; and Mesa, Arizona, in respective order. As the only other Texas city in the top 10, Fort Worth edged out San Antonio to claim the sixth spot.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the list’s safest cities are the ones more accustomed to pedestrians, and they’re mostly clustered in the Northeast. New York came in at No. 1 followed by Boston, Philadelphia, Chicago, Nashville, Louisville, Seattle, Milwaukee, Washington D.C. and San Francisco, in respective order.
San Antonio’s ranking as one of the worst metros for pedestrians might come as little surprise for those who follow the news. Just this week, a vehicle struck and killed a pedestrian on the 1000 block of South General McMullen Drive, and on July 14, a man was hit and killed on I-10 near Guadalupe Street.
