Tejano singer Bobby Pulido is throwing his cowboy hat into the ring as a candidate to represent Texas’ 15th Congressional District as a Democrat.
And there’s no shortage of fanfare greeting his entry into the race.
Pulido, who announced his retirement from performing last November, has been mulling a run for nearly a year to vie for the seat currently held by Republican U.S. Rep. Monica De La Cruz. Since then, he’s embarked on a series of “ranch hall” listening tours and launched an exploratory committee.
“Singing has always been my favorite hobby, but service has always been my passion,” Pulido said in a Wednesday press statement. “Now I want to represent our people through policy and leadership.”
Pulido gained notoriety in the ’90s with hits including “Desvelado,” “Se Murio De Amor” and “Le Pediré. However, he maintains he’s always had an interest in public service, having studied political science at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio before launching his music career.
Although running as a Democrat, the Latin Grammy winner appears to be positioning himself as a moderate. In his campaign launch video, he said he wants to “get the criminals out and secure the border” but added that both can be done “without destroying families and our South Texas economy.
“I’m not Team Red or Team Blue,” Pulido said in the two-minute launch ad. “South Texas, I’m Team You.”
That moderate approach, along with his enduring fame in South Texas, could help Pulido flip the recently redrawn district, which snakes from McAllen and Edinburg to Floresville and Seguin. After all, the district has been red only since 2022, when De La Cruz won in a surprise nine-point victory.
Even so, Pulido likely faces a tough battle against De La Cruz, who’s amassed a $1.3 million war chest, according to the most recent campaign finance filings.
