Muertos Fest, scheduled for this weekend at Hemisfair, will go on despite a significant chance of severe thunderstorms late Friday afternoon through Saturday, organizers told the Current.

The three-day gathering, which bills itself as the nation’s largest Día de los Muertos festival, will get underway at 5 p.m. Friday with its Lighting the Candles of Memory ceremony, followed by a tribute to the late conjunto icon Flaco Jiménez at 8 p.m.

Bexar County will be under a flood watch from 7 p.m. tonight through 1 p.m. Saturday. Isolated thunderstorms are expected drop 1-3 inches of rain on parts of San Antonio, according to the National Weather Service.

Even so, Muertos Fest co-programmer Cristina Martinez said the festival will go on as planned.

“Our mantra is that it’s not going to rain,” she said. “But, it is a rain-or-shine event. The forecast doesn’t seem like it’s going to affect event times, so that’s what we’re hoping for. But it’s rain-or-shine.”

Now in its 13th year, this is the first time Muertos Fest has operated as a three-day-event. What’s more, this iteration is expected to be the largest yet, including more than 90 ofrendas from local groups and organizations.

Given the volume of events taking place downtown this weekend, city officials are encouraging residents to use VIA’s Park & Ride service, which will offer free rides to and from downtown on Saturday, or take a rideshare service.

VIA’s Park & Ride service operates from Brooks Transit Center, Crossroads Park & Ride and the Frost Bank Center.
