The race to determine Bexar County’s next District Attorney is a little less crowded after State Rep. Trey Martinez Fischer, D-San Antonio, filed Monday to run for yet another term in the Texas House.
Despite being poised to enter the DA’s race as a frontrunner, the longtime lawmaker said in a statement to the Express-News that his public service is desperately needed in Austin to fight Gov. Greg Abbott’s proposed rejiggering of the state’s property tax rules.
“Governor Abbott has made it clear that his top priority in the next session is dismantling the tax policies that fund our public education system,” Martinez Fischer said in a statement to the daily. “We need a strong, veteran Democratic voice at the table.”
As Bexar County’s longest-serving state rep and vice chair of the powerful House Ways and Means Committee, Martinez Fischer is certainly a seasoned pro in the Texas Capitol. Indeed, he’s been there long enough that Texas Monthly has named him both of the best and one of the worst state lawmakers at different times during his tenure.
With Martinez Fischer’s exit, the DA’s race appears to have no clear favorite.
Former 4th Court of Appeals Justice Luz Elena Chapa, criminal defense attorney Shannon Locke, prosecutor Meli Carrión Powers and legal expert Veronica Legaretta have all filed to run as Democrats.
So far, former Assistant Bexar County Criminal District Attorney Ashley Foster is the sole Republican to file.
Meanwhile, trial attorney Jason Wolff this week launched a campaign website but has yet to file the paperwork. Wolff previously told the Current he plans to run as an independent.
