Bram Stoker Award-nominated author Johnny Compton (Devils Kill Devils) isn’t your typical shock jockey.

The San Antonio scribe’s short-form horror stories are alternately described as surreal, merciless and thought-provoking. One could say his prose is unified by the fallibility of magical thinking and the inescapability of the Thanatos drive.

Compton will appear at Nowhere Bookshop this Wednesday to discuss his new collection, Midnight Somewhere. The gathering of the author’s short work is among Paste Magazine’s picks for the Most Anticipated Horror Books of Fall 2025 and makes a perfect introduction to his ever-growing oeuvre.

Expect a conversation about Midnight Somewhere with fellow Bram Stoker Award-nominee Jess Hagemann (Mother-Eating) followed by a book signing.

Free, 6:30-8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 10, Nowhere Bookshop, 5154 Broadway, (210) 640-7260, nowherebookshop.com.
