Southtown eatery La Focaccia Italian Grill permanently shut down over the weekend, ending a 30-year run with final service on Saturday, Jan. 31.
Luigi “Domenic” Ciccarelli, the son of restaurant founder Luigi Ciccarelli announced the closure last week in a Facebook post thanking diners for the support and urging them to stop by to enjoy their favorites one last time.
The younger Ciccarelli suggested his retirement was imminent in a 2016 Express-News article. At the time, he said he was looking to sell La Focaccia, 800 S. Alamo St., in an all-or-nothing deal that would include the land, building and business so he could enjoy a quieter life.
“I’m looking to retire, not find another job.” he said at the time.
The Ciccarelli family also ran Luigi’s on San Pedro Avenue from 1972 until 2006, according to the Express-News. The elder Ciccarelli died in 2016 at age 79.
