Gloria Cazares, a mother who lost her daughter in the Uvalde school shooting, was among those who accepted the award for Best Documentary Short at Sunday night’s 98th Academy Awards.
“Gun violence is now the number one cause of death in kids and teens,” said Cazares, whose late daughter Jackie was among the children whose stories were featured in the film All the Empty Rooms. “We believe that if the world could see their empty bedrooms, we’d be a different America.”
The short by Joshua Seftel, Conall Jones, Steve Hartman and Lou Bopp uses the empty bedrooms of four children killed in recent school shootings to uncover the loss and pain their deaths leave behind.
The May 24, 2022, massacre at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde claimed the lives of 19 students and two teachers. It was worst school shooting in Texas and the third-worst in U.S. history.
Cazares said she hopes the film will put a human face on gun violence and yield change.
“Jackie is more than just a headline,” Cazares told the audience. “She is our light and our life.”
