State Rep. James Talarico, the Democratic candidate for Texas’ contested U.S. Senate seat, landed two major endorsements this week as his campaign against Republican rival Ken Paxton heats up.
On Thursday, Talarico garnered the endorsement of the Human Rights Campaign, the nation’s largest LGBTQ+ civil rights and political advocacy organization. The group’s PAC endorsement of the Democrat is part of a $15 million midterm effort to promote LGBTQ-friendly candidates.
“Texans have a clear choice this fall. It’s a choice between the most corrupt politician to run in Texas’ living memory or an honest, engaging leader in James Talarico, who will fix real problems for families across the state,” Kelley Robinson, president of the HRC PAC, said in a statement.
Hours later, Talarico also secured the backing of the American Federation of Government Employees, (AFGE), the largest federal employee union in the country. The AFGE has some 250,000 members in Texas alone.
“James Talarico has shown up for working people in Texas,” AFGE District 10 National Vice President Cheryl Eliano said in a statement. “Whether it is on the picket line, at the bargaining table or in the halls of the Texas legislature, he knows what it means to fight for the people who show up every day to serve the public.”
The endorsements come after the former San Antonio public school teacher drew a crowd of roughly 4,000 people in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex for a campaign stop as part of his The People v. Ken Paxton tour.
The Talarico campaign said North Texas gathering was the largest crowd the campaign has experienced to date.
