Texans love arguing about barbecue, breakfast tacos and whether Dallas still qualifies as part of the Lone Star State. But according to a new national ranking, at least one debate is settled: the New Braunfels Buc-ee’s is officially the state’s top rest stop.
The sprawling Buc-ee’s in New Braunfels has been named the best rest stop in Texas and the second-best in the nation in a report released this week by car rental subscription service SIXT+.
Sixt+ compiled its rankings — which are in honor of the nation’s upcoming 250th anniversary next month — by analyzing the 30 most frequently mentioned rest stops across the country. The company then scored each rest stop using metrics including popularity, convenience, accessibility, family-friendly facilities, and the number of nearby dining options.
With 68,000 square feet of retail space, more than 120 pumps and a prime location between Austin and San Antonio, it’s perhaps no surprise that the New Braunfels Buc-ees scored near the top of the rankings.
The only thing standing between New Braunfels and national bragging rights was Beckley, West Virginia’s Tamarack Marketplace, which snagged the No. 1 spot. That particular rest stop includes not just clean restrooms but a full-scale artisan marketplace and fine art gallery.
Other top rest stops nationwide that cracked the top five included the Iowa 80 Truckstop, the Buc-ee’s in Warner Robins, Georgia, and South of the Border in Dillon, South Carolina.
The New Braunfels Buc-ee’s, though, was the only rest stop in Texas to make SIXT+’s list.
