At Friday’s rescheduled White House Correspondents’ Dinner, President Donald Trump lobbed insults at Texas Rep. James Talarico, saying the Democrat seeking Texas’ contested U.S. Senate seat “hates sex,” “hates women” and “hates Christianity.”
“The Democrats are running a candidate named James Talafreako, who hates guns, hates oil, hates sex, hates women, and says he is a Christian who hates Christianity,” Trump told the room of reporters at the Waldorf Astoria in Washington, D.C. “Other than that, I think his platform is quite good.”
The verbal barrage wasn’t the first attack Trump has unleashed at Talarico since his Senate campaign gained momentum against Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, his Republican rival.
“[Paxton’s] opponent, Alfred E. Neuman, may be the worst TEXAS candidate I have ever seen,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post in late May. “A strong Open Borders advocate, he is WEAK ON CRIME, believes there are 6 genders, is insulting to Jesus Christ, will never support the Military, was a big Mask Wearer until recently, and is a vegan who dislikes meat, not exactly a good way to be if you’re wanting to win an Election in Texas.”
During Friday’s speech, Trump also jabbed former U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minnesota; President Joe Biden; Democratic Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom and former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, a Republican and one-time ally.
The president went on to describe independent news reporter Don Lemon as having the “lowest IQ on TV,” and he lashed out at CNN White House correspondent Kaitlan Collins, with whom he’s had a longstanding feud. He remarked that Collins “never smiles” before comparing her to transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney — a line that largely met with silence, according to The Hill.
Friday’s dinner was rescheduled from April 24 after a gunman rushed through a security checkpoint and shots rang out in what appeared to be an assassination attempt. This was Trump’s first time addressing the White House Correspondents’ Dinner as president.
At the dinner, Trump stirred up controversy by donning a red “Trump 2028” hat at one point in his speech, The Hill reports.
“To show just how much I care about the press, and I want to save your ratings, I am pleased to announce my intention to — and this is somewhat of a scoop — my intention to run for a fourth term as president of the United States,” Trump said before producing the cap from behind the lectern.
After several of his jokes failed to land with the mostly quiet room, The Hill reports that Trump remarked “This has not been an easy evening.”
