Pop the popcorn, political junkies.
Looks like the fight over who gets the 2028 Republican presidential nomination is already getting ugly.
In comments to Politico, U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, took aim at JD Vance for suggesting the senator is already ginning up his next political bid. Cruz blasted the veep as “insecure” and denied he’s doing anything but helping his own party get ready for the midterms.
“In my experience, people engage in political bomb-throwing when they’re feeling insecure,” Cruz told Politico. “So he’s welcome to make whatever comments he likes. I’m going to keep focusing on the midterms and helping us win on Election Day in the next 30 days.”
Cruz made the remark in response to an NBC News interview last week in which Vance accused the senator of launching a White House bid instead of helping the GOP retain control of both houses of Congress.
“It is really obvious to me that, at this very moment, Ted Cruz is running for president,” Vance said. “At this moment, I’m not. I’m trying to help elect Republicans. That’s what I’m going to keep on doing.”
However messy things get between the two, some political observers said they’ll likely put aside their differences once one lands the GOP nomination.
After all, during the 2016 presidential contest, Cruz blasted President Donald Trump as a liar and philanderer before helping phone-bank for him. For his part, Vance labeled Trump “America’s Hitler” before becoming his 2024 running mate.
“While Vance and Cruz may be butting heads now, I suspect they’ll eventually kiss and make up,” Guardian columnist Arda Mahdawi wrote. “They are pragmatists, which is a polite way to say soulless opportunists.”
Texas politics is a mess. We make it a readable mess.
