A 25-year veteran of the San Antonio Police Department has been arrested on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, authorities said Friday.

In a statement, SAPD officials said a warrant was issued for Officer Mark Castillo in connection with a Sept. 26 shooting incident at the Shops at La Cantera while he was off duty. Castillo, who’s assigned to SAPD’s Patrol Division, is on administrative leave while an investigation plays out.

An arrest warrant reported on by KSAT-12 states that Castillo — who once served on former Chief William McManus’ security detail — shot out the rear window of a DoorDash driver’s vehicle after the pair got into a dispute over parking at the Northwest San Antonio shopping center.

Castillo has come under scrutiny before, according to KSAT’s reporting.

In 2024, SAPD suspended the officer for 30 days and removed him from McManus’ executive detail after the department determined that he sent sexually explicit texts to a woman, some while on the clock, according to KSAT.

In May of the following year, Castillo shot a suspect who was later charged with attempting to take the officer’s weapon, the station reports.

According to the arrest affidavit obtained by KSAT, Castillo lifted his shirt during the Sept. 26 parking lot argument and showed the other man a gun on his waistband. The officer then pulled the weapon and asked, “What do you want to do?” the report states, noting that witnesses intervened to break up the fight.

However, the driver reportedly told police that, after he finished his delivery, Castillo approached him again, leading to another confrontation.

At that point, Castillo pulled a gun and fired, shattering the rear window of the driver’s vehicle, KSAT reports, citing arrest records.

Investigators used surveillance footage to identify Castillo after he left the scene, and a witness also captured the shooting on video, according to the document cited in the TV station’s story.

When being interviewed by SAPD Internal Affairs, Castillo acknowledged that he displayed his handgun when he argued with the DoorDash driver but denied firing it, KSAT reports. The officer maintained that he’d punched out the vehicle’s back window.
