Inspired by a weeks-long panic attack that led to a hospital stay, cartoonist, writer and illustrator Gemma Correll created Anxietyland, a graphic novel with a page count rivaling that of Dostoevsky’s Crime and Punishment.
The award-winning British creator is promoting the tome with an appearance this Thursday at San Antonio’s Nowhere Bookshop.
Anxietyland traces Correll’s lifelong struggle with mental conditions revealed during her treatment, including severe anxiety, depression, agoraphobia and dissociative disorder.
In the graphic novel, she creates an imaginary theme park in her mind that includes The Worry-Go-Round, the Emotional Roller Coaster and House of No Fun.
At the very least, Correll proves once and for all that being a smartass is a legitimate coping strategy.
Free, 6-7 p.m., Nowhere Bookshop, 5154 Broadway, (210) 640-7260, nowherebookshop.com.
