San Poke 20770 US 281 N, (210) 998-2556, sanpoketx.com San Poke is SO. GOOD. There’s not a whole lot else that needs to be said, really, as long as you’re a sushirrito or poke lover. If you’re not into raw fish, don’t worry. They’ve got cooked eel and pulled pork (also, how puro is that?) as alternatives to raw fish. Hawx Burger Bar Thousand Oaks Location 2895 Thousand Oaks, (210) 320-4299, hawxburgerbar.com Hawx Burger Bar isn’t terribly new. In fact, they’re pretty well-known for having great burgers. The Good Kind 1127 S St. Mary’s, eatgoodkind.com Labeled as “fresh comfort food” and located in trendy Southtown, newly-opened The Good Kind serves both fresh favorites like salads and sandwiches and classic comfort foods like mac ‘n’ cheese. The Brooklynite 516 Brooklyn Ave, (210) 444-0707, thebrooklynitesa.com Yes, The Brooklynite is closing, but it’s not the end of the world. It will be opening again later this spring at a different, more intimate location close to the Pearl. Not only will the building and interior be more beautiful than before, but the menu will be reimagined. While the previous menu was certainly delicious, the upcoming menu will be even more inspired. The thing we’re excited about this month was the opening of their new rooftop patio and mural, which you can now visit and enjoy your comfort food and drinks overlooking the Alamo City. King’s Palace 3304 Broadway St, (210) 824-0279, kingspalacesa.net How many more restaurants will close on Broadway, in addition to Picante Grill and Sonic? The latest casualty is King’s Palace, a Chinese restaurant that served San Antonio for a little more than two decades. Which, thank gosh, because anyone who has special dietary needs or preferences or food allergies knows how challenging it can be to find tasty foods that are friendly to their diet. Volare Pizza 5054 Broadway St, (210) 828-3354, volarepizzasa.com Opened in the building that used to house the classic Olmos Pharmacy, Volare Pizza is another San Antonio tradition. Their other location opened in the early ‘70s, making them one of the first family-owned pizzerias in the Alamo City. One of San Antonio’s oldest and proudest dive bars, which was open for more than three-quarters of a century, closed its doors in early February. Ruben’s Backyard 13838 Jones Maltsberger Rd, (210) 314-7889, Ruben’s Backyard had a soft opening on January 29 in the building that used to be MoMack’s Malts and Burgers. There may be hope still for long-time fans of this popular wine bar.
