Unless you were among the several hundred million who were glued to the short-form video-hosting service Vine (2012-2016), there’s a strong chance you’re still unfamiliar with Manon Matthews. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Matthews studied dance, theater and film production at Santa Barbara City College, honed her stand-up and improv skills among the esteemed ranks of Second City Conservatory, the Groundlings and Upright Citizens Brigade, and rose to internet stardom by creating what she’s summed up as “ridiculous videos that find the absurdity in everything from first dates to femininity to female celebrities.”

After the Vine rug got pulled out from under its biggest stars, Matthews — who amassed 3 million fans and was twice finalist for Viner of the Year — shifted her DIY video endeavors over to Twitter and YouTube, where viewers can watch her imitating a newborn dinosaur, masquerading as a spastic traffic controller or dueling as disgruntled “roommates” Kim Kardashian and Kristen Stewart. In addition to a bit part as a partygoer on Broad City and a recurring role on Single by 30, Matthews has starred in the forgettable 2016 film Holiday Breakup — which landed on an Assholes Watching Movies’ roundup entitled “Scraping the Bottom of the Christmas Barrel” — as well as 24 episodes of the 2017 series Sorry Not Sorry, “a next-gen female comedy sketch show that is uninhibited and unapologetic, addressing everything from dating to pop culture.”

Featured on the New Faces lineup at last year’s Just for Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal, Matthews brings her candid and irreverent act to Laugh Out Loud for one night only.
$25-$50, 8pm Wed, May 15, Laugh Out Loud Comedy Club, 618 NW Loop 410, (210) 541-8805, lolsanantonio.com.
