Boiler House Makes Happy Hour at the Pearl Affordable And So Tasty

When it comes to the Pearl, and whether cheap food and drinks can be had there, Cured's happy hour seems to garner all of the acclaim. Rightfully so. It's where I prefer to destroy my liver while ingesting the Pearl's fancy food.

I didn't know about the Boiler House's happy hour, though. This upscale grill, first opened in 2012, boasts a really good happy hour that isn't widely known, it seems. And if the purpose of a good happy hour is to cram a little sustenance in your belly while reaching a semi-buzzed state — all for under $20 or so — Boiler House does a fine job.

For starters, happy hour runs from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday — which, for office workers, I realize now, may not be the best times. But for the unemployed and the tourists who were there during my visit, you've got all day!

The menu's simple: just think six. Cocktails and appetizers are $6, as are select reds and whites, champagne and rosé. No beer.

Sitting at the bar, surrounded by tall, 130-year-old brick walls (this once was the Pearl Brewery's boiler room, in case you hadn't put two and two together) and industrial-style accents (caged light fixtures shoot down toward the bar), I ordered the house margarita. The bartender said it would be refreshing on this stuffy early-April day. And it was. Served in a smaller cocktail glass, and on the rocks, the marg was strong and hit the spot.

For food, I ordered the deviled ham 'n' eggs and the crunchy chicharrones. Both were satisfying. The deviled eggs were stuffed to the point where they immediately spilled upon handling, and I needed a fork to finish them. The three egg-halves were topped with sliced cornichons, a lemon aioli, and black pepper ranch. A small salad in the middle of the plate made this a great deal.

The chicharrones were excellent. A small pile of the skins was dusted with guajillo chili powder and sprinkled with lime and crumbles of some kind of queso fresco. On the side were a couple more lime slices and a ramekin of house hot sauce for dipping.

Capping the visit was the bourbon and apples cocktail, a warm and cinnamon-y concoction that seemed out of season, but was good, so who cares?

While not at the level of Cured, (the absence of beer was a turnoff) Boiler House's happy hour is still very much worth mentioning among food and drink deals at the Pearl.
