10 Free Events Happening This Week, Nov. 4-10

1.) Con Estas Manos/With These Hands - Alicia Avila Quilt Exhibit

Monday, Nov. 4, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.

Quilts are works of art with their complex and intricate designs. Come see the work of renowned quilt maker Alicia Avila. Her quilts explore various aspects of art, each varying with traditional patterns, abstract explorations of color, and pictorial presentations of Mexican-American Culture.

2.) Roberta Buckles- On Butterfly Wings: Marked Transformation

Wednesday, Nov. 6, 6 p.m. - 8 p.m.

“We are more than our mirrored reflection, more than the surface of

our skin. We are complex works of art, science and metaphysics. We are symmetry and function, body, mind, and spirit. We know our lungs because we breathe, we know our truths because we think and feel deeply. Marked and changed by significant events and illness, we heal with exquisite imperfection and are transformed,” Artist Roberta Buckle states about her upcoming exhibit “On Butterfly Wings: Marked Transformation.” Her works show symmetry in life and transformation. 3.) The Georges

Wednesday, Nov. 6, 6 p.m. – 10 p.m.

If you are in need of a night of Rockabilly tunes, then head on over to Gruene Hall to hear The Georges. This group from San Marcos is influenced by Buddy Holly, Roy Orbison, and Johnny Cash; so if those names sound awesome to you, then you should hear the awesomeness of The Georges.

4.) Backstage at the McNay

Thursday, Nov. 7, 6:30 p.m.

Diana Malone is known as a triple threat, she not only directed Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew she also designed the set and the costumes. Find out how she did all this from the woman herself, Diane Malone will be talking about how she took off-the-rack clothes and turned into Shakespearian era masterpieces and all the other tasks she took on for Taming of the Shrew.

5.) Cynthia H. Brants + Kurt F. Roesch "Lineage of Modernism"

Friday, Nov. 8, 6 pm-9pm

Modernism is coming to Gallery Nord! Artists Cynthia Brants and Kurt Roesch will be displaying their works that display cubism and modern expression. These works with their use of color, shape, and line will be sure to keep your eyes entertained for hours.

6.) Kelly Luce Signing, Three Scenarios in Which Sasaki Grows a Tail

Friday, Nov. 8, 7 pm – 9 pm

What do an oracle toaster, a girl with a tale, and a sex-change operation all have in common? They are all in Kelly Luce’s book, Three Scenarios in Which Sasaki Grows a Tail! This book is the first of a collection of stories by Luce that explore the power of human memory and measure the human capacity to love. Find out more about it, talk to the author, and get a personal signed copy at the Twig Bookstore.

7.) Dreaming in Gold

Friday, Nov. 8, 7 p.m. – 10 p.m.

Have you ever dreamed in gold? Well after viewing this show you may just do that! This show displays the work of Wesley Harvey. As described by the event’s press release (for the lack of a better way to phrase it), “For this exhibition, he continues his exploration into Queer Theory looking at both the normative and deviant behaviors by utilizing the collage process on his ceramic vessels. Heavily influenced by the imagery of Tom of Finland, drag queens, and personal ads online, he creates narratives of normal and or deviant behaviors and incorporating vintage floral decals with an excess of gold and glitter.” So feast your eyes upon the glitter and dream in gold!

8.) The Jake Levinson Band

Friday, Nov. 8, 9 p.m.

Are you looking for a blues band that also blends their sound with country, funk, Latin and eastern sounds? Look no further, The Jake Levinson Band can supply you with the sound you need. They will be gracing Barriba Cantina with their unique sound.

9.) Hyperbubble Synthposium

Saturday, Nov. 9, 1 p.m.

Jeff and Jess DeCuir, of Hyperbubble, will be giving a "Synthposium." At this synthposium they will be offering a quick intro into the roots of electronic music and the story of their start in musical electronic technology. You can also participate in live demos of a theremin, synthesizer, vocoder, sampler, and sequencer. Learn some new things about electronic music and hang out with Hyperbubble!

10.) The Lost Project

Saturday, Nov. 9, 8 p.m.

The Lost Project consists of brothers Jason and Nick Valdez and long-time friend D.J. Aleman. They originally started off in a Ska band but they have re-united to bring the world some awesome Indie/Pop-Punk tunes. You can check them out at The Mix.
