Since you’ve already got your portfolio updated (for the Artist Foundation applications, natch; see Artistfound.org for details), you may as well copy, collate, and enter the absolutely crazy 2008 Hunting Art Prize. Wait! It’s not even that hard. The company, a petroleum outfit based in Houston, gives away $50,000 guided by a single sample (2-D only please, and no bigger than 6’ by 6’) of artwork, and the field is narrowed based on JPEGs. It’s sort of like they’re tossing it to the wind, and if you wave your arms wildly enough and throw an elbow or two, it could just as well be you with that unrestricted cash in hand. Info at Huntingartprize.com. Deadline is midnight, November 30.
Somewhat more demanding in its application process is the international residency program at Artpace, but where you once had to be tapped for eligibility, you now can apply for the guest curators’ juried shortlist via the Open Call for Texas artists. Perks include travel and weekly living stipends, a materials budget, an apartment and studio/exhibition space, and the chance to follow in the footsteps of alumni such as Franco Mondini-Ruiz and Dario Robleto. The deadline for the 2009 season is next week, September 7. Artpace.org or (210) 212-4900.
