Arts Trivial pursuits

If last week's thunderstorms weren't enough to douse those late-summer doubts about living in South Texas, try renewing your love affair with the state's loveliest city at Fiesta Noche del Rio, the weekend celebration of Spanish, Mexican, South-American, and Latin-American music and dance held in the quaint Arneson River Theater. Basically, it's the stuff you see on postcards, but don't let your inner cynic get the better of this argument; downtown has been missing you. And a cold margarita is never more than five minutes away on the River Walk. The Alamo Kiwanis Club sponsors the event, and all proceeds benefit youth-oriented charities, such as Respite Care of San Antonio, which serves developmentally disabled children and their families. Two weekends of Noche remain before the winter break. 8:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, through August 13. Doors open at 7 p.m. $15 adult; $10 senior; $5 children 6-14; children under 6 are free. Tickets can be purchased at the Arneson River Theater, at S. Alamo and Nueva, beginning at 10:30 a.m. the day of performance. For more info, call 226-4651.

If your inner slacker can't deal with the unalloyed kitsch of Fiesta Noche, take your best know-it-all friends to Blue Star Brewery to compete for suds and prizes at Beer for Brains Trivia Night, 8-10 p.m. Wednesday, August 10. Call 212-5506.
