After last year commissioning a 76-foot downtown mural celebrating the Spurs, Centro San Antonio is doing something similar — albeit on a smaller scale — in partnership with burgeoning nightlife district St. Paul Square.

Centro — a nonprofit that promotes living and working downtown — is now accepting applications from artists interested in creating a new mural that will enliven St. Paul Square’s central outdoor courtyard.

The 11-by-38-foot open-call project will be named “Ole Night at St. Paul Square” and offer a glimpse into the East Side neighborhood’s rich history while symbolizing its evolution into an entertainment hub. St. Paul Square and Centro are offering a budget of up to $15,000 to the artist with the winning proposal.

“By honoring the contributions of our early residents, artists, entertainers and business owners who built St. Paul Square’s legacy, this project will celebrate the vibrant and diverse cultures that make this district a growing destination for entertainment, hospitality, community and creativity,” St. Paul Square Managing Partner Don Thomas said in a statement.

Applications are open now through 6 p.m. Jan. 24. Centro and St. Paul Square will announce finalists in late January and make a final selection in February, organizers said.
