When Waitress was released in 2007, you’d have never expected that this little indie flick would be much more than a cult hit. But what better for a musical adaptation than a dramedy centered on love, new beginnings and pie?
Featuring music by singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles, Waitress, as its title implies, centers on young waitress and pie-baker extraordinaire Jenna. Trapped in a controlling marriage, Jenna discovers she’s pregnant, much to her dismay. With help from her friends, she seeks to enter a pie contest with a high reward, but surprising love connections and interference from her abusive husband throw a wrench into the mix.
The musical certainly captures the original essence of Adrienne Shelly’s film script, which shines a light on the complexities of domestic violence, and Bareilles’ music enhances a feel-good story exploring love, friendship and baking.
