The monthly Black History Film Series, presented by the San Antonio African American Community Archive and Museum (SAAACAM) at the Little Carver Civic Center, continues in August with a celebration of a towering queer, Black civil-rights icon.

On Friday, the series will hold a free screening of James Baldwin: The Price of the Ticket, supported in part by Humanities Texas. The PBS documentary highlights writer and activist Baldwin, whose decades of work exposed the fundamental darkness from which racism pours into America’s psyche.

One year removed from the centenary of the author’s birthday, James Baldwin: The Price of the Ticket blends archival footage, public speeches and up-close-and-personal interviews with his friends, critics and the man himself. The doc’s title is taken from Baldwin’s landmark essay collection that includes unsparing works such as “Stranger in the Village.”

A panel discussion will follow the film.

Free, registration required, 5:30-9 p.m., The Little Carver Civic Center, 226 N. Hackberry St., (210) 724-3350, saaacam.org.
