Photographer Ramin Samandari has been taking portraits of friends and family as part of his practice for years. However, the ritual gained newfound meaning when his mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease in 2017.

Samandari’s current exhibition, The Long Goodbye at San Antonio’s Magical Realism Studio, is a series of portraits of his mother from 1997 to his most recent visit in April 2025. His mother lives in Canada, and he is only able to visit a few times a year.

In a way, the portraits are about the gaps between his visits and the bits and pieces of his mother’s personality that are falling away while he’s not in her presence. The work is a heartbreaking and brave undertaking with visually stunning results.

The Long Goodbye’s opening reception is schedule

Free, opening reception 6-9:30 p.m. Saturday, June 14 and by appointment, Magical Realism Studio, 107 Lone Star Blvd., 107-B, (210) 861-4325, magicalrealismstudio.com.
