More than 18,000 runners will test their endurance in San Antonio this weekend.
Competitors from every U.S. state and 25 countries will participate in the inaugural San Antonio Marathon, which will include events Friday through Sunday, according to organizer San Antonio Sports.
On Friday, runners will participate in the SATX 5K by Holidays on Houston Street, and an expo at Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center is scheduled for Friday and Saturday. Both a half-marathon and a full-length Boston Marathon-qualifying race will take place Sunday.
The San Antonio Marathon replaces the replacing the Rock ‘n’ Roll Running Series that typically occurred in the first week of December.
The marathon and half-marathon will begin in Main Plaza at 7:15 a.m. Sunday, with a finish line fiesta spanning 8 a.m.-4 p.m. The opening ceremony will start at 7 a.m, with 11-year-old mariachi singer Mateo Lopez performing the national anthem.
The marathon’s course is organized to emphasize San Antonio’s rich heritage by bringing runners through neighborhoods including King William, Monte Vista, Olmos Park, Alamo Heights and the Pearl district. Each mile will have a theme representing the city’s culture and history.
The debut of the San Antonio Marathon will follow The Running Event, the nation’s largest runners’ convention, which began Tuesday and continues through Thursday. The back-to-back events make San Antonio the “epicenter of the running world” for the first week of December, San Antonio Sports officials said in a statement.
Registration for all races are sold out, according to San Antonio Sports, and no on-site entry is available. More details about the timing of various events, the routes and how to watch are available at the San Antonio Marathon website.
