San Antonio’s new minor-league baseball stadium is one step closer to reality after the city’s Historic and Design Review Commission (HDRC) on Wednesday unanimously granted “conceptual approval” for the project.
Located on the northwest side of downtown in what now serves as a parking lot for Fox Tech High School, the sports facility will hold up to 7,500 people and is expected to open in time for the San Antonio Missions’ 2028 season.
Meanwhile, additional development projects connected to the ballpark — two apartment buildings and a luxury hotel — will be built on the former site of the low-cost Soap Factory apartments.
The $160 million park for the Missions baseball team will replace the aging Nelson W. Wolff Municipal Stadium on the West Side. The team’s ownership group, Designated Builders LLC, is contributing $34 million toward the project.
The remaining amount will be paid for through public bonds issued by the San Pedro Creek Development Authority. City officials hope the bonds will be repaid largely through property tax revenue from the surrounding projects pursued by locally based developer Weston Urban.
Weston Urban holds a significant stake in the Missions through Designated Bidders LLC.
Although the HDRC gave “conceptual approval” to the ballpark development, the commission still needs to conduct a more detailed final review before construction can get underway.
