San Antonio is the city most likely to win an NFL relocation team — if you believe what artificial intelligence has to say about our prospects.
Sports betting website FlashPicks released a study in which it used AI to predict which cities would be most likely to land a pro-football team should an existing NFL franchise decide to relocate.
“San Antonio being ranked as the next city to get an NFL franchise is exciting for those that live in that area of Texas, and will allow the sport to grow further across the United States,” FlashPicks Head of Operations Callum Broxton said in a statement. “It would become the third Texas city with an NFL team, drawing the Lone Star State equal with California.”
According to the AI consulted by researchers, the team most likely to relocate to San Antonio would be the New Orleans Saints, who played three 2005 home games at the Alamodome in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina .
Even so, the facts surrounding the NFL and the SA market suggest sports fans shouldn’t get their hopes up.
The AI’s prediction appears to be based on existing online discourse about San Antonio being a possible expansion site for the league. Although out metro has a larger population than other existing NFL markets and is growing briskly, the AI appeared to overlook economic factors such as the city’s lack of corporate headquarters and its below-average median income.
It’s also worth noting that the Alamodome is an aging facility, and the NCAA has hinted that it will no longer hold Final Fours tourneys here due to its out-of-date infrastructure. Further, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has also made past comments urging the NFL not expand in San Antonio.
Oh well, people can still dream. And so, apparently, can artificial intelligence.
