Sherri Irvin, professor of philosophy at the University of Oklahoma and vice president of the American Society for Aesthetics, is coming to Trinity University this Wednesday for a lecture about the philosophy of art and “everyday aesthetic activism.”

Irvin, who will speak at 7 p.m., focuses on the intersection of aesthetics and social justice as experienced in everyday life, based largely on research conducted for her book Immaterial: Rules in Contemporary Art (Oxford University Press, 2022).

“Through case studies, I will suggest that everyday aesthetic activism has the potential to heal some of the rifts that trouble us, and I’ll identify some features shared by effective instances,” she said in a description for the lecture, presented as part of the Stieren Arts Enrichment Series. “Then we can think together about what participation in everyday aesthetic activism might look like for us, given our diverse communities, identities, interests, and social positions.”

Irvin parses the practices of contemporary artists, curators, conservators and critics to discuss the possibilities of successful creative expression.

Free, 7-8:30 p.m., Trinity University Campus, Mabee Auditorium at Dicke Hall, 1 Trinity Place, (210) 999-8305, trinity.edu.
