Word on the street
A fine fellow Last year, the Dobie Paisano Fellowship in fiction went to Brownsville luminary Oscar Casares. Winner of the 2004 Dobie in fiction is Austin writer Scott Blackwood, the author of the short story collection, In the Shadow of Our House (SMU Press, 2001). He will begin his residency at the late J. Frank Dobie's ranch in September, where he plans to finish See How Small, a novel set in Austin. Daniel Rifenburgh of Houston is the 2004-2005 Dobie poetry fellow. Rifenburgh is the author of Advent, a collection of poetry that won the 2003 Texas Institute of Letters's Natalie Ornish Award for First Book of Poetry.
Rag time There's a new literary mag in town: Marble, first published last spring, is currently accepting submissions for its fall issue. Summertime sonnets and more As the weather heats up around here, so does the literary activity. Herewith, highlights of this summer's events: Latina Letters: This year, Gwen Diaz (of St. Mary's University) and the folks at the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center have outdone themselves. The conference runs July 15-17 at St. Mary's University, and its theme is "Reporting Our Present, Shaping Our Future: The Representation of Latinas in Contemporary Media and Literature." Presenters include novelist Ana Castillo, CNN Urban Affairs Correspondent Maria Hinojosa, poet Rosemary Catacalos, and Latino USA Executive Producer Maria Martin. Call 386-6598 for more info. Textures: The folks at Textures Gallery (4026 McCullough, 822-9727) are honoring National Book Month and Contemporary Art Month with "With or Without Words: A Collection of Artist Books." The show, which runs July 1-August 14, will feature a collection of artist-made books in various media and unusual formats - some sculptural, some conceptual. The gallery will host an opening reception 6-8 p.m. Thursday, July 1. 2 to Watch: Gemini Ink and ArtPace are presenting this hot collaboration featuring a verbal and a visual artist once again. This time around, the event will be held at Gemini Ink (513 S. Presa, 734-9673) and the featured speakers are artist Jessica Halonen and writer Patti Wetzel. Halonen will present her work exploring biological systems, including her daily struggle with diabetes. Wetzel will discuss her writings based on her personal experience as a physician who contracted HIV through an accidental needle-stick. Beautiful: Gemini Ink and the Girl Scouts of the San Antonio area present "All Colors, Shapes, and Sizes: We Are Beautiful," a creative writing workshop and body-image discussion for girls in the fourth to sixth grades with San Antonio writer Aretha Williams.
