As reported on the Sacurrent.com Curblog last week, Liberty Bar proprietor Dwight Hobart has entered into a contract to buy the old St. Scholastica Convent on South Alamo, next to Steve Yndo’s St. Benedict Hospital redevelopment. The building has as much character — albeit of a 90-degree angle, stone-and-brick nature — as Liberty Bar’s nativity scene and current home on Josephine Street, which is famous for its Great-Flood-of-1921-induced slant as well as Chicken Breast in Hoja Santa, and an inviting bar.
Rumors of the original bar’s demise are as of yet premature, says Hobart. He’s working on renegotiating the lease, so you can anticipate either one or two fine drinking-dining establishments, but no dearth of the atmosphere and Mexico-influenced cuisine we’ve come to rely on.
“It’s a no-lose situation,” says Hobart, who was in an ebullient mood last week over his prospects, despite the fact that he’d recently lost an iPhone in the Panhandle, chasing an unruly herd of yearling cattle over a beaver dam on the Washita, on horseback.
“I was loping to get around them,” Hobart recalls. “I felt the iPhone go sailing out of my pocket into the tall grass ... For all I know, the beavers are now retrieving their email on my iPhone.
