Bon Appétit is the latest national media outlet to recognize the transcendent morning experience that is a San Antonio breakfast taco.

In a newly posted story, the venerable food and entertaining mag offers effusive praise for the Alamo City’s favorite culinary start-me-up, along a list of eight local restaurants that offer exemplary versions.

Penned by SA-based writer Edmund Tijerina, the piece explains the special affinity our city’s residents have for grabbing flour tortillas loaded up with fresh and flavorful ingredients at the start of a workday. Or a lazy Sunday, for that matter. “No dish cuts across income, class and geography quite like this combination of Mexican and American culture,” Tijerina writes. “The dish represents the best of the city, nestled in a warm tortilla.”

Half or more of the restaurants on Bon Appétit‘s list will be familiar to local taco hounds — Original Donut Shop, 3307 Fredericksburg Road, and Con Huevos Tacos, 1629 E. Houston St., for example.

However, the article also gives plenty of ink to hidden gems such as Yatzil, 502 S. Zarzamora St., which earns raves for a chilaquiles taco that offers a “culinary handshake” linking the separate ways the dish is approached north and south of the border.

Other restaurants getting nods for their pillowy tortillas and fiery salsa include Taco House, 6037 San Pedro Ave.; Mendez Cafe, 201 Bartholomew Ave.; El Milagrito Cafe, 521 E. Woodlawn Ave.; Maria’s Cafe, 1105 Nogalitos St.; and Little Taco Factory, 1510 McCullough Ave.

Some might argue Bon Appétit is late to the game in recognizing the greatness of our city’s contribution to breakfast food pantheon, but at least the magazine’s editors recognize the delicacy’s epicenter is San Antonio, not fucking Austin.
