A San Antonio dining institution has taken its final bow.

After 46 years on the Broadway Corridor, Good Time Charlie’s — a diner beloved for the three Cs of comfort food, cold beer and community — has closed its doors, ownership revealed Thursday.

The restaurant’s founders, Milliard Stetler and Eddie Ruffo, launched Good Time Charlie’s, 2922 Broadway, in 1979 after meeting as students at Jefferson High School. What began as a late-night dining concept with live music evolved into a Cheers-esque gathering place for generations of locals — a spot for family gatherings, late-night meals, business lunches, monumental life events and more.

Wednesday was the restaurant’s final day of operation. A statement announcing the closure offered no explanation for the timing.

Children’s museum the DoSeum — Good Time Charlie’s neighbor and a popular Broadway attraction — recently purchased the land adjacent the restaurant. In the statement, Stetler said the deal aligns with his long-term hopes for the area but added that his decision to close was unrelated to nearby land developments.

“We are thrilled that this property is now in the good hands of The DoSeum, which was always our preferred outcome,” Stetler said in the statement. “The timing was right for us, personally.”

The DoSeum’s recent purchase includes two parcels of land — the parking lots surrounding Good Time Charlie’s and a nearby plot leased by Taco Cabana.

However, the corner property on which Good Time Charlie’s sits remains under separate ownership. While The DoSeum will gain control of that parcel, it will not hold the deed, according to details shared by the restaurant.

“We’re proud of our legacy and excited for what’s ahead,” Stetler said.
