Does camp coffee taste any good in real life? Estate Coffee Company and Alamo Outdoor Company are giving professional and amateur coffee brewers the opportunity to find out.

"Basecamp Coffee Competition" will take place this Friday, January 25 at 7 p.m. at Hub MRKT (1203 S. Alamo St.) in Southtown. Sign-ups start an hour before. A $5 buy-in gets you the chance to show off your brewing skills.

The competition is capped at 20 participants, none of whom are permitted to use any electricity besides a head lamp. You can bring your own supplies or use the grinders and brewers provided. Estate will provide coffee for all to use.

A winner will emerge from four rounds with a prize of all the buy-in cash and a collection of coffee and outdoorsmanship swag from Estate, Alamo Outdoor and Aeropress, a kind of coffee maker that travels easily.

Besides the competition, there will be beer from Hub MRKT. Tapatio Vegan Tacos will be on hand as well. So you can just hang out and watch the spectacle.

Coffee has gotten pretty exact. See if your favorite barista can function without scales, timers, thermal spectrometers and proportional-integral-derivatives and simply heed the call of the wild.
