An old Southtown standby has new digs.
After shuttering temporarily to relocate, the Station Cafe reopened Monday at 1010 S. Flores St., mere blocks from the location it occupied for two decades.
The Station Cafe created no small measure of alarm when it closed its location at 108 King William St. in March at the same time its owners permanently shuttered sister business the Filling Station Tap Room. However, the sandwich shop reassured loyal customers that it was just relocating and would soon begin serving in a new spot.
That new location occupies a ground floor storefront alongside coffee shop and vintage store R + R Collective Co. as well as a brow studio, an architecture firm and other businesses.
The modern, mixed-use complex is a departure from the Station’s endearingly old-school former location right off St. Mary’s Street, but it’s trading some of that vintage charm for upgrades. The new space will offer patio seating as well more parking options, both on the street and in a nearby 30-car lot.
Unlike the cafe, the Filling Station isn’t due to make a triumphant return. However, owner Jonathan Rowe hopes to transfer the beer and liquor permit to the new space and finally combine the cafe and taproom concepts, MySA reports.
And while the Station’s menu is largely unchanged, there will be minor adjustments, Rowe told the news site. Due to the new space’s smaller kitchen, the business has nixed full pizzas from the menu in favor of pizza by the slice.
The cafe’s hours are currently 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday but will expand once the taproom is operational.
Rowe revealed to MySA that he initially didn’t plan to move the Station Cafe when the Filling Station closed in March. However, confusion around the closure of the Filling Station seemed to impact the sandwich shop as well.
