While already crackling with fried-chicken concepts, San Antonio is poised to welcome yet another.
Starbird Chicken, a California-based chain that originated in the Bay Area, will expand into the Alamo City and other Lone Star State markets next year, according to company officials. Its specialty is organic, antibiotic-free chicken that’s hand-breaded with gluten-free flour and flavored with a blend of spices.
Starbird will open up to 36 stores spread across San Antonio, Austin and Houston via a multi-unit franchise deal with Texas-based Mac Haik Restaurant Group. However, officials didn’t reveal addresses for the new units or the opening dates.
In an emailed statement, Starbird CEO Greg Levin called Texas a “critical market” as the chain continues growing on its 10th anniversary. Currently, it has locations in California and Colorado.
Starbird offers a standard assortment of chicken offerings on its current menus — nuggets, tenders, sandwiches, wings and salads — along with sides ranging from french fries to Brussels sprouts.
The eatery also sells plant-based chicken as an option and provides other modifications on its menu for guests with dietary restrictions. Its rotating specials include a Japanese lineup, with options including a Japanese barbecue tender box with okonomiyaki fries.
