A new bar called The Hush Room has quietly opened in Stone Oak, and it’s serving up Prohibition-era vibes with a modern twist.

Think plush leather couches, a moody 1920s-inspired interior and cocktails that practically beg to be sipped in secret. Inside, it’s all speakeasy chic, while the exterior vibe shifts to a laid-back sports bar with a sprawling patio.

The Hush Room is the brainchild of Brad Vehrs — who managed multiple Stout House bars, along with partners Donnie Ferguson and Erik Duron, the latter of whom also was involved with Stout House.

Vehrs told the Current his goal for the venture is simple: give Stone Oak back a nightlife spot that actually feels worth dressing up for. The founders aimed for meticulous detail inside, even building the back bar themselves.

“When you used to go to Stone Oak, there were plenty of nice bars. But now, you typically have to go to Southtown or the Pearl area for upscale bars or speakeasy-type lounges,” Vehrs explained. “We wanted a place where people would actually want to go to spend money on nice drinks in Stone Oak.”

Currently, the only other bars in the Stone Oak area boasting similarly sophisticated or speakeasy-type vibes are Books: A Whiskey Society and The Green Lantern. Arsenal, a speakeasy from the owners of Pastiche located in plain sight in Tap Rack Social, is a bit further down U.S. Highway 281.

The Hush Room will be open seven days a week, including 4 p.m.-2 a.m. Monday through Saturday and noon-2 a.m. Sundays.

While the patio has more of a party vibe and serves as a place where patrons can catch the latest football game, the crew is still keeping the volume down to respect the neighbors.

“We wanted to bring the elegance back to Stone Oak’s bar scene,” Vehrs added.
