Axel Oliva, a co-founder of San Antonio’s Michelin-recognized Leche de Tigre Cebicheria Peruana, has died at age 31, the restaurant said in posts to its social media accounts.

Oliva started the Southtown-area restaurant in 2023 in partnership with his brothers Emil Oliva and Alec Oliva. All three were born in Laredo to a Peruvian father and a Mexican mother, and they spent eight years growing up in Peru and absorbing its flavors, including the ceviches their restaurant is known for.

“It’s with heavy hearts we share that our brother Axel Oliva tragically passed away earlier this week,” the business said in its short announcement.

The message gave no cause of death and asked for privacy as the family deals with the loss.

“We are taking time as a family and team to grieve,” the post added. “Leche de Tigre will be closed Tuesday through Thursday.”

A memorial service is scheduled for Thursday, April 2, at Porter Loring Mortuary, 1101 McCullough Ave. It will open to the public at 5 p.m.

Axel Oliva died on Sunday, according to an obituary shared on Porter Loring’s website.
