Nationally lauded West Side dining spot The Good News Burgers has temporarily closed due to damage from an overnight fire, the Express-News reports.

Fire crews responded around 3:30 a.m. Tuesday to a call at The Good News’ location at 972 SW 36th Street and found a blaze that originated in a vent fan above an ice machine, according to the daily.

Although emergency responders quickly extinguished the fire, the Express-News reports, the business will be forced to close for several days due to heat and smoke damage. Authorities are still investigating the cause.

The Good News launched roughly a dozen years ago as Papa’s Burgers but rebranded in 2021 after Houston-based Pappas Restaurants slapped it with a cease-and-desist letter, claiming its original name could create consumer confusion. In 2023, the mini-chain closed two satellite locations to focus on its original West Side store, located inside a converted house.

Despite its humble origins, the restaurant amassed a local following and grabbed praise from national food writers. Time Magazine and Yelp ranked Papa’s at No. 4 on its 2018 list of the 10 Best Burger Joints in America, and website Eat This, Not That two years later named one of the eatery’s menu items the best burger in Texas.
